Where a spreadsheet is better
A spreadsheet is a genuinely good net worth tracker, and for some people it is the right answer.
- Unlimited flexibility. Track debts, pensions, cars, business equity or anything else, in any layout you like. Total Worth has fixed categories and does not track liabilities.
- Any currency. A spreadsheet handles any currency you care to add. Total Worth supports only EUR, USD and RON.
- Easy sharing and syncing. A file in a cloud drive syncs across your devices, and a shared Google Sheet lets a partner edit in real time. Total Worth data stays in one browser unless you export and import it.
- You own the logic. Every number is a formula you can inspect and change. If you want a custom valuation method, you can build it.
Where Total Worth is better
Total Worth is for people who like the idea of a spreadsheet but not the upkeep.
- No formulas to build or fix. Property, cash and investment valuations are built in. There is no range to extend each year and no broken reference silently skewing your total.
- Charts out of the box. The dashboard shows your total, each category and how they evolve, with a slider to pick any range from month to month. No chart setup required.
- Multi-currency without the bookkeeping. Balances in EUR, USD and RON are converted to your display currency automatically. You can edit the rates or refresh them from a live rate feed in Settings.
- Household view and inflation built in. Add a profile for each person and see the household total with a per-person breakdown. Enter yearly inflation rates to see real, inflation-adjusted values.
- Just as private. Like a file on your computer, your data stays on your device, stored in your browser. There is no account and no server.
- Friendlier on a phone. The interface adapts to small screens, which is easier than editing a wide spreadsheet on a phone.
Total Worth’s limits, plainly
Total Worth trades flexibility for convenience. Keep in mind that:
- Every value is entered by hand. There is no bank, brokerage or exchange syncing, so you update balances and prices yourself, typically once a month or once a year.
- Only three currencies are supported: EUR, USD and RON.
- It tracks assets (property, cash and investments). Debts, mortgages and loans are not tracked.
- There is no app-store app. It is a responsive web app that works in mobile browsers.
- Your data lives in one browser on one device. To move it or back it up, export a JSON file and import it elsewhere. Clearing your browser data deletes it.
Which one should you choose?
Keep your spreadsheet if you enjoy building it, need to track debts or many currencies, or share it with someone who edits it alongside you. Nothing beats a spreadsheet for flexibility.
Choose Total Worth if your wealth is mostly property, cash and investments in EUR, USD or RON, and you would rather spend five minutes updating numbers than an evening fixing formulas. You get the charts, currency conversion, household view and inflation tracking without building any of it.
You can also use both: keep the spreadsheet for detail, and use Total Worth for the big picture.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to a net worth spreadsheet template?
Yes. Total Worth is a free net worth tracker that works like a ready-made template: add properties, bank accounts and investments, and the dashboard calculates totals, converts currencies and draws the charts for you.
Can I import my Excel or Google Sheets net worth spreadsheet?
Not directly. Total Worth imports only its own JSON backup format, so you enter your assets by hand. Most people only have a handful of accounts and properties, so this takes a few minutes.
Is Total Worth as private as a spreadsheet on my computer?
Very similar. Your data is stored in your browser’s local storage on your device, with no account and no server. The difference is that clearing your browser data deletes it, so export a JSON backup from time to time.
Can I get my data back out of Total Worth?
Yes. Settings lets you export all your data as a JSON file and import it again in another browser. There is no direct Excel or CSV export.
Does Total Worth work on my phone?
Yes. It is a responsive web app that works in mobile browsers. Keep in mind that each browser keeps its own copy of your data; use export and import to move it between devices.
